Are you studying animals? Looking for some fun classroom decor? Are you teaching science vocabulary? Want to further develop your students’ speaking and listening skills? You can cover all of these bases with animal posters!
benefits of using animal posters
Of course, the most obvious use of animal posters is to decorate your classroom. Kids love animals and have endless curiosity about them, so it makes perfect sense to use them around your room as part of your decor.
But posters can be much more than just decoration. Here are some benefits of using animal posters in your classroom.
- An eye-catching poster will grab and maintain students’ attention and interest.
- They can be very motivating to some students, making them want to learn more and delve deeper into a topic.
- Since posters usually focus on a single object, theme, or idea, it’s easier to get students to focus on that particular topic.
- Images can sometimes evoke more emotions than words alone. Using a colorful poster to introduce students to a unit on wild/endangered animals can help make them more open to learning more.
how to use posters in your classroom
This post focuses on animal posters specifically but these ideas would work for most subjects or topics.
- Choose one animal poster to focus on for the day. Hang it where all can see it.
- Let students interact with the poster. Read stories about the animal and/or show some short videos. At the end of the day, give students sticky notes and ask them to write one thing they learned about the animal, or one question they still have. Then have them read their note to the class and come place it on the poster.
- Show students a poster. Ask them to think of the different questions they have about the animal. Make a master list of their questions. At the end of the day see how many of their questions were answered.
- Use one or more of the posters as part of a writing prompt.
- Show different animal posters and have students write a story about one of them.
- Use posters to teach parts of speech. Ask students to write down or say all of the adjectives they can think of about the animal. Ask what kind of actions this animal might do … will it fly? run? jump?
- Use the posters as an introduction to the different biomes around the world. Pick an animal and then find some story books about the type of habitat it lives in. Jungles, forests, deserts and grasslands are common bases of story lines. Then talk about how the animal has adapted to live in that habitat.
