Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in March can be so much fun! And the timing is perfect, as we’re hopefully finishing up the last of winter and marching into spring. With it’s colorful rainbows, leprechauns and pots of gold, St. Patrick’s Day activities can help banish those winter doldrums and have us feeling like spring!
Fun St. Patrick’s Day Activities
Borax Shamrocks
What would St. Patrick’s Day be without shamrocks! Your students will love this St. Patrick’s Day activity using borax, hot water and pipe cleaners! If you’ve ever used borax to make crystal shapes, you know how much kids love to make them. They turn out really well and they’re easy to make.
You’ll need:
- a mason jar for each student
- string
- pipe cleaners
- food coloring
- green and white pipe cleaners
- boiling water (3 cups/jar)
- pencil or straw
- borax (1/2 cup per jar)
Borax can easily be found in the laundry aisle of most stores. You should probably handle the boiling water yourself, but you can help students put the borax in their jars and then you can do the pouring part. Stir it until the water is clear, then add any food coloring you’d like.
Have the students twist their pipe cleaners into shamrock shapes.
Tie the string to the stem of the shamrock and then tie the string to the pencil or straw. Then carefully lower the shamrock into the borax solution, making sure it’s not touching the sides or bottom of the jar.
Then you just place the jars in a place where they won’t be disturbed. Leave them overnight and by the next day you’ll have beautiful crystal shamrocks!
Draw A Leprechaun
This directed drawing St. Patrick’s Day activity is really fun. Students love to draw and using directed drawing with them has so many added benefits.
