try some sight word games
We know that our students need to practice their sight words as often as they can. We also know that just drilling words can lead to a dislike of word work and reading.
So here’s a game from homeschooling fun with lynda that you might like to try. It’s easy to prep and set up and doesn’t require any complicated materials. You can use it with a small group or have several tins set up so that several groups can play at a time.
All you need for this game is a cupcake tin, some cupcake liners, a marker, and a ping pong ball. Use the marker to write a letter or word on the bottom of the cupcake liners and place them all in the cupcake tin.
Students toss the ping pong ball into the tin. Then they can say the word or letter that’s in the bottom of the liner. Easy peasy! Another option is to write math problems in the cupcake liners.
Another fun game is Jump and Grab. You can use cupcake liners for this game too (I seem to be fixated on cupcakes today!) or even small paper plates.
Again, write the sight words on the liners. Then you’ll tape them lightly to a piece of yarn. You want them to be loose enough to come off the yarn easily. Tape the yarn holding the liners to a door frame or from the ceiling. Make it more interesting by cutting the yarn into different lengths. The only “rule” is that they have to be just out of reach but high enough so that they have to jump up to reach them.
Call out a sight word and and let the students jump to grab it!
