Fall is really a fun time of year! There are so many iconic items to incorporate into our lessons… apples, pumpkins, colored leaves, cooler weather, and Halloween and Thanksgiving to name a few. Our students tend to get pretty excited about these activities, but Halloween may be the most anticipated. Teachers are in need of low-prep Halloween activities to keep students engaged but learning at the same time, so I’ve put together a few ideas for you! And check out this previous post.

Halloween Alphabet Game
You can easily modify this fun game for older or younger students. And it can be used with any topic!
Make a sheet with each letter of the alphabet written down in order. It’s helpful to leave a line for kids to write on. The theme for this one is Halloween. Students are challenged to come up with, and write down, a word beginning with each letter that goes with the theme.
Some ways to modify:
- younger students can draw their word ideas if they can’t spell the words
- this can be done independently, in pairs, or in small groups
- set a timer for playing
- make it a competition by having small groups or pairs work together for a set time, like 3 minutes. Then the group with the most relevant and correct words at the end of the time could get small prizes such as erasers or stickers.
Do Directed Drawing
Directed drawing is a great way to get students excited about art! Students follow along with a video that instructs them how to draw different pictures. The beauty of this activity is that students’ drawings will all be different since they’ll be interpreting the directions independently. As a bonus, it’s a great way to work on listening skills and following directions.
This YouTube channel is called Art Hub and has dozens of Halloween directed drawing activities, as well as many other themes.
You can make this into an literacy activity by having students write lists of adjectives about their drawings, or make up a story to go along with it.
Do Some Halloween Coloring
Coloring is always a fun and relaxing activity. It’s always good to take a brain break and engage in some creative expression. There are dozens of free Halloween coloring pages you can print out for your kiddos.
Again, you can always turn this activity into something with a bit more educational value by adding on a writing activity.
You can snap up these fun coloring pages in the free resource library.
