Have you considered giving your students a back to school quiz? It may seem like a strange thing to do at first glance, especially with young students. But it can be a fun way for kids to break the ice with each other and learn something about you as well! And when you combine that with QR codes (which kids tend to love) you’ve got a fun first or second day activity! And check out my other “back to school” post.

Why use a back to school quiz?

Most students get nervous as the first day of school approaches. They wonder what their teacher will be like, will they know anyone in their class, and how will they make friends. That’s where this free fun back to school quiz comes in!

It’s crucial for students to feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment. That doesn’t happen right away, but using some activities that allow them to start to get to know you and the other students will certainly help, especially on the first day.

For The Whole Class …

One way to do this is with a fun whole-class activity called “How Many?”. This is an active way for students to respond to ice-breaker questions. You can have them answer in several different ways other than raising their hands.

You could have them stand up by their seat if their answer is yes. Or you could give them white boards or some other object to hold up for a yes answer. With a white board, they could also give a bit more information than just a “yes”. For example, ask “How many like pizza?” and then follow up with “What’s your favorite kind?”. Students can write their answers on the white boards and show you and each other their answers.

Many students are shy, especially when they don’t know the teacher or many other students. They most likely won’t want to say their answers in front of the class, but they will answer on paper. You’d be surprised how detailed students will be when writing down their information. So having an answer sheet for students to write their answers on will help them to open up a bit more.
