Fun fall literacy ideas
- If you live in a place with a discernable Fall season, take your kiddos outside to experience Fall. Get them to pay attention to details by asking them to use all their senses. For tasting, bring out some cider, pumpkin seeds, or apples.
After they’ve had some time to experience the season, go back inside and ask them to think of words that describe Fall. Make a list. Then ask them to use those words to write down what they noticed with all of their senses.
- Here’s a way to help them start building more complex sentences.
Write a very simple sentence on the board, something like “The bat flew.” Then ask your students to add descriptive terms to make it a longer, more complex sentence. So our example could become “The small black bat flew quickly out of its cave and into the sky to look for bugs.” Add to it by having them illustrate the sentence.
- Have your students make journals and do some writing about Fall. You can use writing prompts to help them when they’re struggling with what to write.
What are your favorite things to do in the Fall?
Which do you like better – apples or pumpkins?
Describe how Fall makes you feel.
What would you see if you went for a walk in the woods?
fun fall math activities
- Pumpkin Predictions – get 3 pumpkins of various sizes and weights. Ask your students to guess which one is the heaviest, lightest, and middle weight. Help them make a data table to record their weights, then go ahead and weigh them. How close were their predictions?
- Use the same 3 pumpkins to see if there’s a correlation between weight and circumference. Use a tape measure to measure around the widest parts of the pumpkins. Does the heaviest one have the biggest circumference? Do a class graph of the data.
- Cut open a pumpkin and remove all of the inner seeds and fibers. Have students count the seeds. Use them as manipulatives for grouping, addition, or ubtraction.
