Classroom organization is one of those things that are very individual. What works for one person may not work for another. If a picture or idea that you see here resonates with you, it might be worth giving it a try. I’ve gathered five fun and easy ideas for ways to organize your classroom … maybe one or two of them will work for you! See my earlier blog post for technology organization ideas.
Classroom organization ideas
Use Filing Boxes and Dishpans
These handy containers can be used for so much more than just files and dishes!
- Sort construction paper in a file box by color. You’ll always know exactly how much you have on hand and will avoid those crumpled sheets and edges. Stand the sheets up on their ends for easiest viewing.
- Use plastic dishpans to store books for your classroom library. They’re easy to organize and you can sort your books by topic, reading level, or any other way that works for you.
- Use a well-labeled file box or dishpan to hold substitute materials.
Organize Your Curriculum With Color
Color-coding is useful for so many things!
- Use colored file folders to organize your curriculum materials by subject. Hanging folders work great for this! It’s a fun and eye-catching way to organize and makes it easy to grab what you need.
- Store units in colored binders. Then they will easily sit on a bookshelf.
- Set up separate pencil cups for extra crayons or colored pencils. Sort them by color. No more searches for specific colors of missing pencils or crayons!
- Use magazine holders to sort your scrapbook or construction paper by color.
Use Stackable Bins or Cubbies
Stackable plastic bins have any number of uses!
- Stack five of them to sort materials for each day of the week.
- Sort materials according to your work flow. For example, you could have bins for Copying, Grading, Returning, etc.
- Assign a bin or cubby to each student. Even young students can learn to keep their own materials organized.
Use Pencil Pouches to Store Small Materials
Fabric pencil pouches work great for storage! Then store the pouches in some of your plastic bins.
- Use them to store puzzle pieces.
- Store small game pieces in them.
- Organize task cards.
- Of course, you can always use them to store pencils and pens! Have one for each student. Then they can keep them in their cubby.
Label Everything
You can label anything and everything in your classroom. Having all of your materials, spaces, curriculum, etc. labeled with pretty colored labels adds to the overall look of your classroom. It also makes it much easier to teach your students how to take care of your room. Everyone will benefit when they all know where and how to find what they need.
To aid your labeling endeavors I’ve created some cute classroom organization labels using a LEGO theme!
